London is a sprawling metropolis with lots of green spaces, but there’s more than just Hyde Park! So here it goes, The 5 Best Parks & Green Spaces in London. Each one of these parks make for the perfect spot for an al fresco lunch or for a stroll to recharge your batteries. If you’re feeling extra playful, check one of our London Discovery Games.

The name originates from the beautiful Crystal Palace it once housed, but unfortunately in 1936 it was destroyed by a fire. Nevertheless, it’s an amazing park that has some of the world’s oldest life-size dinosaur sculptures, created in 1854. This explains why the sculptures have such an odd look – and even questionable accuracy! There’s also a maze and a pair of sphinxes. We love this place.

Neighbourhood: Crystal Palace

Hampstead Heath offers amazing panoramic views over the city skyline, it almost feels as if you’re outside of London. You can find majestic displays of British flora and fauna. You’ll find families, locals and animals as opposed to tourists in this park. It is also home to a true hidden gem (yay!!) that is free to visit, the Kenwood House. During the (warmer) summer days you even take a dip in the lake here!

Neighbourhood: Hampstead

Primrose hill is located north from Regent’s Park and it has a character all of its own. It used to be a place where duels were fought and prize-fights took place. However, these days it offers a great view over London’s skyline and makes for the perfect spot to have a drink and relax looking down the hill.

Neighbourhood: Camden

In the early 1200s this used to be a Royal Park. The British monarchy introduced the red and fallow deer here, enclosed in the park. Nowadays it’s still under the ownership of the Crown but it is open to everyone.  It’s the perfect spot to soak up some sunshine, learn about the flora and fauna, row (yes!), cycle or go for a walk. And yes, the deer still roam free!

Neighbourhood: Richmond upon Thames

Greenwich Park used to be a hunting ground. Greenwich is a village very well known for its maritime history. The view from up the hill is one of the most famous views over Thames and London skyline. Perfect for soaking up the sunshine or a picnic!

8 Best Viewing Points of Lisbon

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.24.2″ text_font=”Ubuntu|300|||||||” header_font=”Ubuntu|300|||||||” header_2_font=”Ubuntu||||||||” header_3_font=”Ubuntu||||||||” hover_enabled=”0″ z_index_tablet=”500″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Miradouro is the Portuguese word for viewing point – and one of the most amazing things about Lisbon is that there are tons of them! Viewing points are also meeting points for locals, expats and travellers alike. All of them offer a great view, obviously, some are right in the centre, others further out. Go enjoy them. Join the locals.

The majority of our favourite miradouros are also part of our routes. Play our Discovery Games in Lisbon and find them!

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_blurb title=”1. Are you looking for a beautiful view away from the hustle and bustle of the city? This is the place for you. Miradouro Panoramico de Monsanto is remotely located in the middle of one of the biggest urban forests in Europe. The actual building used to be a restaurant but now turned into a 3-storey urban art gallery with a 360-view of Lisbon.
Neighbourhood: Monsanto

[/et_pb_blurb][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_blurb title=”2. MIRADOURO DO MONTE AGUDO” image=”//stg-secretcitytrails-staging.kinsta.cloud/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/WhatsApp-Image-2019-02-19-at-15.55.44.jpeg” _builder_version=”4.16″ body_font=”Ubuntu|300|||||||” z_index_tablet=”500″ global_colors_info=”{}”]

This is a perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee or a beer in the late afternoon… It’s a true hidden gem in central Lisbon (sssst!). Miradouro do Monte Agudo is located in a local/residential area and we can guarantee that 90% of the people you’ll meet there will be Portuguese.
Extra recommendation: Veganeatscaffe is nearby, DO NOT MISS the delicious chocolate cake there!
Neighbourhood: Anjos

[/et_pb_blurb][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_blurb title=”3. If you are a fan of architecture, this viewpoint will fulfil your cravings. It’s located in the oldest part of Lisbon, Alfama. Here you’ll enjoy the beautiful view to Tejo river over the terracotta ceilings of the old houses. This is also the starting point of our Big Lisbon Discovery Adventure and our Alfama game.
Neighbourhood: Alfama

[/et_pb_blurb][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_blurb title=”4. Did you know that Lisbon is said to be a city of seven hills, just like Rome? This viewpoint is located on the highest hill of Lisbon, yet, for some reason the hill of Graça is not counted in the ‘7 magical hills’… Still, totally worth a visit!
Neighbourhood: Graça

[/et_pb_blurb][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ z_index_tablet=”500″ global_colors_info=”{}”]

This viewpoint is one of our personal favourites! The view is amazing, especially at the time of the sunset.
Neighbourhood: Graça

[/et_pb_blurb][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_blurb title=”6. This viewpoint is said to be the most romantic one in the centre of Lisbon! No wonder why, the cute and tiny green areas and multiple individual benches to sit down and just enjoy the view are pretty spectacular…

Neighbourhood: Bairro Alto

[/et_pb_blurb][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_blurb title=”7. This viewing point is hidden in one of the most touristic parts of Lisbon, however it’s one of the most harmonious corners in the city. A perfect place to catch your breath while exploring the hilly and narrow streets of Alfama.
Neighbourhood: Alfama

[/et_pb_blurb][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_blurb title=”8. Are you feeling adventurous? If yes, this is the viewpoint for you! It’s located in the ruins of an abandoned factory. The view from this place is quite different compared to other miradouros. You’ll be just next to the river and on the other side you’ll see picturesque Lisbon.
Neighbourhood: Almada (Requires a ferry ride from Cais do Sodre to Cacilhas)

Hi Filipa! We can’t wait to see what you’ll be up to on your incredible journey this autumn. Before we dive into travel related questions, let’s do a short intro for our followers, shall we?

Hey! I’m Filipa, I’m a ‘90s child who’s always up for a new adventure; so if you’re looking for a road trip partner, I’m probably already by your side with my seatbelt on! I’m a super friendly, bubbly girl and also a creative mind; I love to express myself through photography, acting and writing. I live in a small village near Setúbal, a seaside city an hour from Lisbon but I’ve spent a lot of time in Lisbon for the last few years as I worked and studied there. I graduated in Social and Organisational Psychology and studied Anthropology, so you can say I’m passionate about discovering and understanding people and cultures.

Some months ago, after spending one year working in a big company, wanderlust gripped me and I quit my job to start traveling. I felt like I couldn’t deny myself any longer the desire to know more about the world, you know? I started to share a bit of my travels and daily life on my Instagram page and found myself increasingly passionate about travel and lifestyle content creation. When I saw that Secret City Trails was looking for a travel content creator I thought this opportunity was made for me! By then I was already following Secret City Trails and was very interested in its “by travellers for travellers” concept. While exploring a new city, I always try to do that “as a local”, by hunting for its lesser known but worth visiting places, as I believe it takes your travel experience to another level. I had that strange feeling that something good was about to change my life, even before applying.

What are the necessary elements for a great city trip for you?

When I arrive in a new place, I don’t really have a specific “to-do” list or high expectations; I have a rough idea of the things and places I would like to see and visit but I like to let the travel flow surprise me. So then, a 20 minute walk between two points may turn into a full-on three-hour excursion, if I get sidetracked seeing “other” things that I discover on the way! And, believe me, sometimes it could end up being the best part of the trip. In short, for me, it’s useful to have a flexible travel plan before you go. I also like to search for some photo location inspiration and helpful local travel tips before arriving at the destination.

How do you hunt for secrets in new cities you are visiting?

In this case, I totally recommend talking to strangers! I challenge you to try this: as soon as you arrive at your destination, turn to a side street and look for some old local coffee shops or a grocery shop. You’ll probably find someone nice who recommends you a place that is not in the tourist guides, where you can try the best local cuisine, for example. Also, I advise you to stay in a central hostel. I often travel low cost, so I’ve been to some hostels and I found them a great place for getting to know new people and to share ideas on how to discover some of the city secret spots and hidden gems. If you’re lucky enough, you can even find a travel partner there.

You’ll get to visit quite a few beautiful and vibrant cities soon. Are there any places you’re particularly looking forward to explore?

Do I really have to choose? Besides Vienna, I will be visiting all those cities for the first time. Amsterdam has been on my list forever and I was planning for it to be one of my next destinations, so I’m particularly excited about this one. I can see myself there already, exploring every inch of the canals, and its countless bridges, historic churches and cute houseboats. Do you know that you can go plastic fishing on the Amsterdam canals? I think this environmentally friendly initiative may be one of the most unusual things to do in Amsterdam and a different way to explore the canals. I would love to try it out.

Can you look in your camera roll and find a photo of something that caught your attention in a city?

Here you can see the Postlingberg tram in Liniz. You may not believe me, but my 20 minute ride from the centre of the city to the top of Linz’s local mountain in this old tram ride was one of the highlights of my trip to Austria, as me and my friend reached the top just in time for sunset! The view was mesmerizing and I almost cried for joy. Postlingbergbahn is the steepest adhesion railway in Europe, so it’s an experience you can’t miss!

Since you know the city so well, what are your top 3 unusual things to see and do in Lisbon?

Listen to stray fado (fado “vadio”) in Clube do Fado Amigos do Fado – CLAF
I believe this fado house in Chelas is the oldest fado house in Lisbon; it is also a fado school. It has a small restaurant inside, so you can go there for trying the typical caldo verde or other typical Portuguese dishes, while listening to fado music. Actually, my first live fado experience happened there. On Sundays, they have fado matinée starting around 16:00, where you can see some young singers taking first steps in their career.

Have a drink in Rio Maravilha in Alcântara
This rooftop has an unparalleled view of the bridge and river and it’s situated in one of the coolest areas of Lisbon, LX Factory, which is also a must see. It’s known by being the city’s “creative corner” as it shows how portuguese modern urban art has been evolving.

Explore Free Water Aqueduct (Aqueduto das Águas Livres)
Built in the XVIII century, this is a giant stone aqueduct that crosses Lisbon and had provided generations of locals with water. It offers one of the most unusual views of Lisbon.

One last question: do you have any inspirational motto that you keep in mind when you travel and explore new cities?

Yes, expect less, be more open to every possibility. I’m an open minded and flexible person, and I think that’s a plus for having a great travel experience 😊

This piece is located on the wall of Travessa dos Fiéis de Deuswas and was painted by Sumo Doubledevil in December 2014, on the same day of the opening of his solo exhibition at the Montana Gallery. He was accompanied by DJ Glue and Mister when the police patrol came and stopped him. Luckily, people from the neighbourhood stood up for him and the police decided to turn a blind eye, instead insisting that leave right away. When the police car drove off the locals decided to keep an eye on the police patrol so he had a chance to finish the piece. Fado Vadio is the most famous Fado graffiti in Lisbon and it’s located in the Escadinhas de São Cristóvão. Movimento dos Amigos de São Cristóvão is a project of a small group of people living in the neighbourhood that united their forces to improve and make the neighbourhood more beautiful with some talented artists. It’s said that the building where Fado Vadio graffiti is located belongs to a public company that allowed this project to happen because of they didn’t have money to restore it themselves. The paint was donated and the artists created this charming graffiti in two days. Play our discovery game across Lisbon’s Historic Neighbourhoods or go on a shorter adventure in Alfama & Baixa.

On Avenida 24 de Julho you can find a fox that is a combination of sculpture and painting. One’s trash is Bordalo II’s treasure. The fox is a part of series called Trash Animals that speak out about the problem of waste production, not reused materials, pollution and the emerging effects on the planet. He mostly uses materials found from wastelands and abandoned factories.

This park was closed to the public for centuries, but luckily it’s now a huge green space where you can easily spend half a day relaxing and enjoying the views (of the castle as well as the bridge!). Head to the Mouraria district for the next hidden gem! A once forgotten ‘ghetto’ in days long gone, this old town style neighbourhood is now packed with character and life, with its wonderfully multicultural population and medieval architecture. It’s worth a visit to see the less-touristy and more authentic side of central Lisbon. Just a short walk from Martim Moniz square you’ll see a police station, upon entering you’ll find the old College of Young Orphans beautifully decorated with 18th-century tiles telling stories of different biblical scenes. It’s a treat for the eyes and a staple artefact from Lisbon’s history.

There are actually two Tasca do Chicos in Lisbon, one in Alfama and another in Bairro Alto. Both of them are from the same owner and have the same concept. It’s a must-see place if you are a fan of Fado (traditional, melancholic Portuguese music). Here you can have a dinner, or small bites and a good glass of wine, while listening some Fado. You can enjoy the performances on Mondays and Wednesdays starting at 21:00, we recommend arriving on time to ensure a place there. La Carbonería is an abandoned coal factory in the Eixample district and it is packed with history. The building used to be one of the most famous squats in the city, but in 2014 the police evicted the residents. The building was scheduled to be demolished. Luckily for us, the city council reconsidered and re-categorised it as being of historic and artistic interest. Nowadays, the huge painting of a hot air balloon on its facade has led it to become one of the most photographed murals in Barcelona!

It’s pretty easy to spot Gaudi’s work around the streets of Barcelona, but here’s one you may well have missed. Found north of the city centre, Casa Vicens is one of Gaudi’s lesser-known, and sometimes even forgotten, designs. It’s one of the artist’s originals and it dates back to the late 19th century. Beautiful and innovative, this design is definitely worth seeing! If you want to find out more about Barcelona’s street art, read our blog post on it here

You’ve probably heard of Manu Chao, the musician… El Bar Mariachi is actually owned by him and it’s located in the heart of the Gothic Quarter. It can be challenging to find but it’s worth searching for it! It’s a small, colourful and unique – and has a quirky atmosphere. It’s a popular spot among Barcelona’s musicians. If you are lucky, maybe you can even see a live performance of Manu Chao there.

We love games, so it may not be a surprise that this garden made our list! This historical garden is located in the Horta-Guinard district. It’s the oldest conserved garden in the city, with a neoclassical style and a hint of Italian influence. In reality, as the name suggests, it’s a complex maze! If you are looking for something completely different on your city trip, Hospital del Tórax is a must see. This spooky, and said to be haunted, abandoned hospital is located in Terrassa. They used to treat people with respiratory illnesses here until 1997. After the closure, people have wandered around the empty halls and claim to see ghosts….

Rota do Chá is a magical spot to eat brunch (one of our favourite things to do!). Of course you can also go for any meal, but as you might have guessed by the name, their speciality is tea! You can choose your favourite from tons of different flavours from around the world. The interior is inspired by Indian design and creates a calming environment… However, the best spot is the beautiful green chill-out garden, where the laid-back vibes guarantee the best tea experience in Porto!

Have you ever wondered what a combination of a 1920’s bookstore and café/bar would look like? In Porto, you can experience this mix! Livraria da Baixa is a bookstore where books go hand in hand with drinks, ‘petiscos’ and music. The relaxing and charming atmosphere is a result of the mixture of the ancient furniture and the experience of reading a book and sipping a drink simultaneously. This spot also happens to be in the trendiest neighbourhood in the town.

In this park you’ll find some of the best views of Porto, toward the city and over the Douro river. Entering the park feels like stepping into a fairy tale! The botanical garden has a great variety of flora – ginko, giant magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons and a lot more. You might even encounter a peacock while strolling around the park and exploring the small gardens. This park used to be the site for Porto’s Crystal Palace but now it’s replaced with the semi-spherical Pavilhão Rosa Mota, where they used to have concerts, sports events and fairs.

If artisanal coffee is your cup of tea, or should we say ‘coffee’, Combi is the place to go. Combi is a pioneer of the Portuguese artisanal coffee culture. Everything started 4 years ago with a dream to serve good coffee in remote places. At the beginning of their coffee journey, they only had a coffee truck, but now they also have a set location 10 minutes away from São Bento train station. Combi started with a with a coffee blend from Guatemala, but nowadays their selection includes single origin coffee for example, from Colombia, Ethiopia and Indonesia. If your sweet tooth is aching, you can accompany your coffee with pastel de nata or if you are looking for healthier option, choose açai with granola.

Curious tiny 3D faces… most of them decorate buildings in Paris, but some can be found in cities across the globe, one in Amsterdam! Gregos was born in 1972 and grew up in the northern suburbs of Paris. He’s a self-taught artist and started his career in the late 80s / early 90s. He invented his own 3D technique, and started to replicate his own face with different expressions; which turned into a collection of over 1000 faces! The original motive of TLP was to combine making art and travelling… They started making art in Amsterdam in 1998, focusing on making visually disappointing streets more vibrant. It’s not something to take for granted that this mural still exists on the wall of Prinsengracht 70. First, everything seemed to be alright, the kind owner of the building gave permission for TLP to create black and white image of a totem pole lad being constructed by a Bob Gibson robot. But then the Amsterdam city council’s officials came by and told that TLP would have needed an extra permission to paint the building. Luckily, officials allowed them to finish the characters, but the city council needed to decide whether to keep mural or have a bland wall. In the end, also this story got its happy ending, with the power and support of the local residents and Dutch press, the mural earned an artistic merit and a cultural significance.
