In May 2015 Madame Petisca came to Lisbon with a goal of sharing experiences through tapas, wines and authentic Portuguese products. The concept is created by Shiadu brand and the values are shown by good quality service, a guarantee of quality and demand. As a location, it’s also an interesting place to visit, because the restaurant is in an old French perfume factory just next to the Miradouro de Santa Catarina. To learn more about the area, play our Bairro & Principe Real: local hangouts and forgotten stories game.

Next to Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara, you’ll find Solar do Vinho Porto serving over 300 labels of port wine accompanied by Portuguese hams and cheeses. The 18th-century building is fascinating as it was restored by Paulo Lobo and the tasting room still has the original tiles of the palace.

Maria Paola had a dream to share the memories of her childhood kitchen and bring the knowledge of Italian gastronomy beyond pizza and pasta to people’s mind, and it’s how Casanostra was born. Marble floor, soft home furnishing and small artistic decorations create a cosy space.

Tânia Martins and Susana Felicidade combined their expertise and created the concept of Pharmacia. This restaurant is located in National Association of Pharmacies and the decoration goes along the theme that reminds of an old pharmacy. The menu consists of Portuguese cuisines, such as croquettes, codfish and stuffed tomatoes. For an adventurous mind, they offer a surprise menu that always includes a starter, meat dish, fish dish and dessert. There is also a bar that serves Portuguese wines and quirky cocktails, for example, you may enjoy ‘paracetamol’ or ‘LSD’ on the terrace! Fabulas is a combination of a café, a restaurant and a wine bar where it’s easy to spend the whole afternoon. They decided to keep the original stone walls and decorated the space with leather sofas, antique chairs and even sewing machines converted to tables. From the menu, it’s possible to find something for everyone, it has a large variety of dishes including, salads, soups, toasts, main courses and desserts without forgetting craft beers and wines.

Don’t get confused about the name, word ‘cervejaria’ is not connected to beer. Cervejarias are restaurants that are specialised either in seafood or meat dishes. Cervejaria Ramiro is famous for their great seafood, many people even say that it’s the best in whole Lisbon. We recommend making a reservation because of the queue, it’s always long.

You’ll find this hidden little sculpture garden near De Plantage, just follow the signs for Zootje Petit Zoo. Believe us when we say that this is no ordinary zoo! The rustic, metal sculptures wait patiently between the grass and plants. This is a wonderful and quirky half-day experience for all the family, just remember to keep your eyes peeled for the dinosaur and the zombie!

Our favourite market in Amsterdam, Noordermarkt! Besides the fact that the location is gorgeous, it’s along the Prinsengracht and on the edge of the Jordaan, its a lovely spot to spend a Monday or Saturday morning. It’s known for its flea market and Farmers market and happens on Mondays and Saturdays only. On Mondays, there’s a textile market on Westerstraat, right next to this one. We’ve all heard the tales of how good Dutch beer is..but where do you start? We’ve got you covered. On our Amsterdam East trail you will end your adventure at one of the most beloved, longest-standing craft breweries in Amsterdam. As a celebration you could try one of their seven standard beers, such as the IPA; Zatte, a Belgian blonde, and the IJwit. If beer isn’t for you, then you could also take the opportunity to try Jenever, a juniper-dominated spirit only really consumed by the Dutch.

Amsterdam’s ‘rough around the edges’ docklands has been revitalised in recent years. Still sporting its industrial charm, abandoned warehouses have been transformed into co-working offices, tasteful waterfront restaurants and vibrant event spaces. In wonderful contrast to the canal district’s traditional tall houses, the Eastern Docklands has provided the city’s architects with a blank canvas to demonstrate contemporary Dutch design.

Amsterdam’s Oud West has all the charm of a residential neighbourhood combined with the flair of the diverse and dynamic area it has become. Admire the concept stores on The Overtoom shopping street or catch an indie film at arthouse cinema LAB111. Its wonderful mishmash of coffee shops, street markets and speciality festivals is a treat for the senses, but the real adventure begins with taste! Tuck into some meat-free delights at Vegan Junk Food bar, sample indo-dutch cuisine by the canal at Waterkant and wash it down with ice-cold Asian cocktails at Happyhappyjoyjoy.

Bike rides, boat trips and…baby goats? Yep, you read it right! A hike in The Amsterdamse Bos is no regular walk in the park. If you love exploring the wide open spaces of the countryside but you’re also not quite ready to wave goodbye to city life, then this is the forest for you. As you walk through the woodlands, you’ll discover an open air theatre, public swimming pools, a canoe lake and a biodynamic goat farm, where you can even take part in early morning yoga sessions with the animals!

Amsterdam’s centre welcomes millions of tourists per year, so it can be difficult to discover a new side to the canal district that no one has seen before. So once you’ve ticked Dam Square and the Van Gogh Museum off your itinerary, consider heading to Utrechtsestraat for food and drinks. Once nicely rested and fuelled, take to the streets of Amsterdam’s centre and discover one of the oldest houses in the city, the Hermitage museum and the ‘skinny bridge’! You can also discover a secret garden cafe on our alternative discovery route.

There I was on my city break in Lisbon, joined by a couple of friends living here, about to start playing a ‘city discovery game’ by Secret City Trails and wondering what am I getting myself into. My sister, who recommended the game to me, had said it’s like a treasure hunt – something we loved playing as kids – combining riddles and sightseeing. At this stage I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but it sounded like fun and I didn’t want to drag my friends to the landmarks they had visited with other guests again and again.

There were small huddles of tourists admiring the view of the Tagus River, but the first riddle – following 18 flowers that always blossom – guided us to a quiet street away from the crowds. The first riddle had us searching for murals, we had to take a closer look to count birds, ships and other details we might have otherwise missed. It took us two attempts, but we solved the puzzle and unlocked a story about Lisbon’s famous decorated tiles, azulejos. I don’t want to spoil any riddles, because the satisfaction of finding the correct answer is priceless!

Just to give you an idea, we followed a sculpture’s gaze, looked angels in the eyes and found messages hidden in beautiful street art pieces. The riddles were diverse, with varying difficulty levels. By the way, if you can solve the riddle near a shop with traditional Portuguese conserves in three guesses or less, then your detective skills are impressive! It took us many tries and we even had to use a hint, but once we found the correct answer it seemed so obvious we couldn’t stop laughing.

We finished the treasure hunt in the garden of Botto Machada, sipping freshly made iced tea in the sun. So which trail would we like to try next? The one that features a labyrinthic cemetery, or the trail of Lisbon’s best local food specialities, or perhaps the one that takes players around the city’s most amazing rooftops? Choosing between them was just another puzzle to crack that day – and as we’d found out from the game creators, we had riddle ninja skills.

Tabatha moved to Riga two years ago and fell in love with it. With a burning desire to explore the paths less travelled, she has spent hours familiarising herself with untouristic neighbourhoods and getting lost in the city parks just outside of the Old Town.

Hello, Tabatha! Or actually… how do you greet a friend where you live?
Sveiki!

You’ve built an amazing game in your city. How come you know all those incredible secret spots and fascinating local stories?
I love sitting in the cafes and chatting with my local friends who tell me about the history of their beautiful country. I have also spent hours wandering through the parks just outside the Old Town. The parks are beautiful and yet so close to the city centre.

You must have discovered a lot of new things in your two years in Riga, but what’s your most recent discovery?
Herbārijs! A great cocktail bar that grows many of their own ingredients. Hidden away on the roof of the Galleria Riga. It is open all year and feels like you are in a green house. Great vibe and a beautiful place to spend a sunny afternoon.

What’s your favourite meal of the day and where do you go to make that meal extra indulgent? What’s your top pick from the menu?
There are so many amazing places to eat in Riga, I have been astounded at the choices I have. I like a lunch with friends, sometimes on a patio. My current favourite is Cafe Mio on Blaumana iela. While they do steak very well, their sea trout ceviche is amazing.

Speaking of photos – please take a look at the gallery in your phone. What’s the most recent picture of the city you took and what’s the story behind it?
Most of my pictures are of the parks, especially in the snow. I started running after I moved to Riga because I wanted to spend more time keeping active while exploring, and I love escaping the city and enjoying nature. Taking a picture of the canal or the trees is always a good excuse for a quick “break”!

A group of friends are visiting in your city; where should we take them to fall in love with the city?
For a true Latvian experience, I like taking friends and family to the Kalnciema Fair. This is part farmers’ market / part craft fair where you can experience traditional Latvian products and see some of the traditional wooden buildings. This place is bustling, and local vendors get a kick out of people trying to speak Latvian – I have been given free food for trying! Buy some bread and cheese and find the ice-cream vendor in the bow-tie – they have charcoal ice-cream! Wrap-up with a coffee at Kairi Cafe. I used to live close to here and their Caesar salads were a lunch go-to for me!

And once the friends’ visit is over and we need some quiet and focused time to catch up with studying/working/reading, where do we go?
I love curling up with a book at Apsara Tea House. It is the perfect place to chill with a great tea or coffee. I head for the location along the canal and love to sit upstairs when it is snowing, or around the hexagonal wooden building in the summer. This is also a fantastic place to let the world go by!

Yay! A surprise long weekend appears in your calendar and a couple of tickets to any European destination land in your mailbox… where do you go on an adventurous city break, and why?
Florence! I like wandering old city streets and getting lost. Florence is a great place for this, plus just outside the city is beautiful countryside with bike ride winery tours. Not to mention the food, which is amazing.

Our Munich game builders Raymond and Max are international friends, English and Dutch, who used to work as snowboard & ski instructors and now make a living in tourism and travel. They live in the Alps outside of Munich, which they say is peaceful and beautiful and has the added benefit of easy access to a big city. They have their own tour company, which means they love exploring new places and meeting new faces!

You’ve built an amazing game in your city. How come you know all those incredible secret spots and fascinating local stories?
Munich has been our favourite getaway for many years now and we come here at least once a week. Meeting and befriending locals resulted in us getting to know the city inside and out. This all started about 9 years ago. We are guides and like to show people around. I think this lies in our blood and whenever we show someone around in Munich, the guide in us takes over.

As guides you must make a lot of new discoveries! What’s your most recent one?
Our trail takes players past a little Italian place called Eatily and I found out that they sell very good pizza. But to stay more on topic, we’ve been discovering all the open beer gardens. Now it’s nearly summer there are so many lovely places to grab a beer and a sausage.

What’s your top pick from the menu?
There is two that come to mind.

Munich is famous for their Weißwurstfrühstück (White Sausage Breakfast) and this must be on anyone’s list to try. A Weißwurst, together with a Bretzl (Pretzel) and of course a 0,5L Weißbier is a staple dish. You can even get this at the airport, where they have their own brewery on site as well.

And the second one, the actual favourite is the Schweinshaxe (Pork Knuckle). A roasted Pork Knuckle that comes with a typical sauce and usually with a Knödl. Not really sure how to translate that, but I always name it a Dough Ball.

A group of friends are visiting in your city; where should we take them to fall in love with Munich?
There is one more hidden gem which lies just outside of the centre and this is the English Garden. This is a huge park where you can go for a walk, a beer and you can even go surfing here. Yes, actual wave surfing on the Eisbach. The locals come year all year around (yes also in Winter!!) to surf. And even if you don’t know how to surf yourself it is still a pretty cool sight to watch.

English garden again! In the summer of course, but find a spot on the grass to lay down or sit. When it is sunny, this is the nicest place to be.

What’s the most recent picture of Munich you took and what’s the story behind it?
Definitely the Peterskirche. This look-out platform gives you the best panorama view over the city in all directions. Side note, you have to climb a lot of stairs to get there but it’s completely worth it. When we climbed it we had the problem of being quite hungover as well, but that’s because Munich offers some very good nightclubs too!

One last question, but no spoilers, please! What’s your favourite riddle on the trail you’ve built there?
My favourite riddle on the tour has to do with the biggest surprise that Munich gave me as well. Munich has had many Kings in the past and the chances are that you as a tourist could maybe only name one, or none (no hard feelings). But I can assure you, our trail leads up to the one world famous King who’s name you have definitely heard before.

What’s your favourite meal of the day, and where do you go to make that meal extra indulgent? What’s your top pick from the menu?
Brunch! When Nicky and I need a good girls’ day we always get brunch at Ojalá in Malasaña. Nicky always orders the “Granjero” brunch combo and I get the “World Mix” or “Veggie”—they come with coffee, fresh juice, eggs, bread, fruit, yogurt, cake, and more. Bonus points if you can get a table on the terrace.

A group of friends are visiting in your city; where should we take them to fall in love with the city?
La Latina: the most historic neighbourhood, full of picturesque buildings and ancient eateries. Try any tapas bar on Calle Cava Baja, and look for a secret garden hidden nearby.

And once the friends’ visit is over and we need some quiet and focused time to catch up with reading, where do we go?
To relax, Retiro park! It’s enormous, so there’s always enough space to find a quiet spot away from the chaos of the city. You can sunbathe, read, study, or picnic. If you need WiFi, try LAP Café or Plenti for great coffee and good co-working vibes.

As an urban treasure hunter, you probably keep on finding new hidden gems. What’s your most recent discovery in your city?
Completely by accident I found a cosy rooftop with a fantastic view of the Acropolis. It’s called Loukoumi Bar and it’s located close to the Flea Market.

What’s your favourite meal of the day and where do you go to make that meal extra indulgent? What’s your top pick from the menu?
I would choose to be having dinner with all my friends, preferably in the taverna on my street called Kapetan Michalis (Καπετάν Μιχάλης). Must order for me: FAVA and of course some λευκό κρασί (white wine)! Also, when you have a chance, try Loukoumades, a traditional sweet from Greece.

From hipster breakfast spots, to street food markets and Dutch food as ‘mom’ would cook it – we’ve listed seven of our favourite foodie spots in Amsterdam.
