You’re capturing great content from Amsterdam. How do you usually discover new places in the city – beyond playing our discovery games?
Often times I’m on a mission to finding a good cafe to study at or a new restaurant to try with some friends. Other times, I get too lazy to look down at my google maps and end up getting lost which isn’t so bad because I usually find cool places I note to come back and visit.

What’s your most recent discovery in Amsterdam?
During the months leading up to the New Year’s Eve, you will start seeing bright and white pop-up stores around the city called Gebakkram (also known as olliebollenkraam). Here, you can find oliebollen (literally translated as oil balls), which are delicious traditional Dutch donuts with a wide variety of flavours for you to choose from. My personal favourite is the appelbollen (apple balls). So if you’re around town, grab a Dutch donut before it’s too late (November to January).

What’s your favourite place for an indulgent feast in the city and your favourite local snack/dish?
The Original California Burrito Company is my personal favourite. It’s a small restaurant around the Spui area that sells the most hearty burritos you’ll find in Amsterdam! It’s fast, filling, with most meat or veggie options and most importantly delicious! Besides that, we all know the classic Dutch stroopwafel (literally translated as syrup waffle) which is my favourite local snack. You can find them at basically any store in Amsterdam, but I highly recommend getting your delicious dessert at markets such as Alerby Cuyp for the full experience.

A group of friends are visiting in Amsterdam; where should we take them to fall in love with the city?
For a perfect afternoon that will for sure make my friends fall in love with the city is bringing them to Amsterdam East. It’s a beautiful neighbourhood with amazing restaurants and local shops that will keep them busy for the afternoon. After they had enough of retail therapy and their stomachs are full, I would bring them to Oosterpark. I think the park shows a different, quieter, side of Amsterdam that most visitors won’t expect coming from such a vibrant and busy city.

And once the friends’ visit is over and we need some quiet and focused time to catch up with studying/working/reading, where do we go?
My go to is always Coffee Company as, as I learnt from my experience in the city, there’s a branch somewhere near you wherever you are in Amsterdam. And being a coffee addict like myself, you’re always certain there will be good and reliable coffee waiting for you to enjoy along with your reading.

What’s the most recent picture of Amsterdam you took with your phone and what’s the story behind it?
I just spent my whole Saturday trying to catch up on University work with some friends at a cafe and we were making our way home. On our way to the metro station, we were mesmerised by the cotton candy sky. The winter weather had us freezing but I could not resist taking a few photos of the sunset. It was so beautiful that for a few minutes, I completely forgot about the miserable wind and cold that is typical of Dutch weather. I love how a few seconds before, I would have done anything in my will-power to get indoors but once we saw the sunset, we spent so long admiring the views and taking photos, photos, and more photos! We were out there probably longer than we should have. Funny what the view can do to you…

Yikes! We have just one photo left on a film in the camera… Where from do we snap a stunning view of Amsterdam?
With Netherlands being such a flat country, it’s hard to encapsulate a view of Amsterdam in one photo. So what’s something that represents Amsterdam more than the view of Amsterdam itself? The canals! Often times, the canals are overcrowded by tourists trying to get their iconic canal photos as well. So I definitely recommend going to the Prinseneiland area. Not only do you get the canals, you are able to see the traditional Dutch architecture and possibly spot the red windows. Or if you have some time to spare, take a walk outside of Amsterdam central because trust me, there is bound to be a canal on every road you pass by.

You may remember I was particularly looking forward to exploring Amsterdam, which has always been on my must-visit wishlist. For the first two days of my big international journey I could barely sleep, I was so excited! I stayed in Flying Pig’s Uptown, next to Vondelpark, which has a real party vibe. From the outside it looks like a typical old Amsterdam mansion, but when you open the reception door (which is also a bar) you feel the vibrant atmosphere and hear a lot of languages right away.

The hustle and bustle of Amsterdam is apparent as soon as you arrive to the centre – not even the rain slowed down the city for a bit! Believe me, pretty soon you’ll want to escape the crowds and explore off the beaten path! This is exactly what I did, but before I get into my adventures, I want to share one of my first impressions. Of course, it has to do with the city’s bikes. I was astonished with the Bakfiets (a transport bike), that are a popular way of transport in the district. All around the Jordaan area I saw moms and dads with their kids speeding through the alleys at breakneck speed! So remember to keep your eyes wide open!

On my first day in Amsterdam, I played a Secret City Trails discovery game in Jordaan. As a solo traveller, it was super comforting to already have a plan! Jordaan has always been known as a creative neighbourhood with an intriguing history, so I noticed small unusual things since the beginning of my route, like a weird statue in the middle of a canal or an unusual boat house structure. The trail guided me along the city’s beautiful canals, challenging me to really explore it – despite the rain – by solving riddles. The weather wasn’t great, but the game gives you a lot of tips of local cafes and restaurants, so I already knew where to stop when I wanted to rest in a cosy place to warm myself up – or to eat a slice of pie!

During the game you’ll pass some of the most charming streets in the heart of Amsterdam, and cross some of its main canals. The latter was one of my favourites: you can find there Anne Frank’s house. It’s a really touristy place, but during my game I unlocked a recommendation to visit online “The Secret Annex”. The house is located near the beautiful Westerkerk, which has the highest church tower in the city – a head-spinning 87 meters tall. I was really curious about it since the chimes of its clock tower are mentioned in Anne Frank’s Diary. Also worth seeing is a lovely small Anne Frank’s memorial statue at the foot of Westerkerk. Prinsengracht is also perfect for an evening walk. At night, the old canal houses are beautifully lit and the atmosphere is magical! Now, I’d love to share with you some of my Amsterdam favourites!

Try to spot little hidden details, like an old typical Dutch chocolate house or a random painting hanging on a tree. My favourite discovery in Jordaan was, no doubt, the hidden tiny replicas of typical Dutch houses! I prefer not to tell you where they are located since you would love to find them yourself when you play the game. Also, you may notice the addresses on the street jump from 70 to 54, which is unusual, right? You’ll be amused with how both of those things are linked when you unlock this story!

On Johnny Jordaan Plein (at the intersection of the Prinsengracht and Elandsgracht) you’ll find a small collection of statues of famous 20th century Dutch musicians. I was told by the woman that works in Arnold Cornelis that these five bronze statues are representing the famous musicians Manke Neilis, Tante Leen, Johnny Jordaan, Johny Meyer, Mien and Jan Froger. There are no plaques or information about the statues near them, so it’s always nice to ask locals about local stories.

Not many people know that the outdoor area of one of the most expensive museums in Amsterdam has free admission. I found Rijksmuseum garden surprisingly peaceful and loved its playful fountain, a giant chess game, and colourful flowers. At the time of my visit, there was a free temporary outdoor exhibition of Louise Burgeois’ famous monumental spiders.

The Museum Quarter (‘Museumkwartier’) is definitely a place to visit in Amsterdam, even if you don’t want to enter any museum. I loved its buzzy atmosphere and if you are lucky enough, you’ll see some street musicians playing along the museumplein (museum square). I found some incredible performers bringing music to the streets of Amsterdam all over the town, but the concert I saw in museumplein was something special.

Romantic things to do in Amsterdam

Meeting up with someone new and fancy doing something more original than a bar date? Or want to spoil your partner with a day made up of many mini dates? Whatever the occasion, Amsterdam is a great place for an alternative date adventure. We’ve listed our favourite activities for a romantic excursion, pick one, or two, or hit up all these spots and activities.

And of course, if you already know you want to go on a playful date, check out our city discovery games in Amsterdam straight away!

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_blurb title=”Breakfast date?” image=”//stg-secretcitytrails-staging.kinsta.cloud/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/breakf.png” admin_label=”breakfast” _builder_version=”4.16″ body_font=”|300|||||||” z_index_tablet=”500″ global_colors_info=”{}”]

Mix things up and start your day with a date. There’s plenty of great breakfast places in Amsterdam, some that we love are, Cafe Katoen (it’s also super central), Bakers & Roasters (of course), CT Coffee & Coconuts and the Yoghurt Barn. If you’re hitting it off over breakfast and want to continue your date, why not play a game? It’s a great way to get to know each other even better!

[/et_pb_blurb][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_blurb title=”Play games together!” image=”//stg-secretcitytrails-staging.kinsta.cloud/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/couple-game.png” admin_label=”play games ” _builder_version=”4.16″ body_font=”|300|||||||” z_index_tablet=”500″ global_colors_info=”{}”]

Who doesn’t like a bit of competition? Plus, Plato (yep, the Greek philosopher) said that “you can learn more about a person in an hour of play than an entire year of conversation”. Take your date to play the old arcade games at the Ton Ton Club! Or play a real life riddle game. We happen to have a few in Amsterdam – check our Amsterdam urban adventures. Of course, there’s always the thrill of a good escape room!

Looking for lunch date ideas? We’ve got your back. Here’s our favourite lunch places for a date. You might find yourself back in de Pijp at CT Coffee and Coconuts, or surprise your partner and take them to Dignita Hoftuin. A spot nearby is the roof of Zoku (read: great views) + their food is fabulous too. Benji’s (Amsterdam East) is another romantic lunch spot. So take your pick!

A stroll. A bike ride (on a tamdem!). A run. A dance. The park is the perfect place for it. Wandering through the lush green spaces of Amsterdam together make for a great date. Want to stay central? Vondelpark is lovely. Westerpark has plenty to explore too (you could start with breakfast at the Bakkerswinkel there). Or, surprise your date/lover and take them to the Amsterdam Forest.

Amazing when you’re the reason putting a smile on your lover’s face. Whether it’s because you’re super funny, or because you took them to see some comedy – a smile is a smile! Of course, there’s the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh and Stedelijk Museum surround Museumsquare and there’s hundreds of galleries, small and big, around the city. But art, doesn’t stay indoors in Amsterdam. Curious tiny 3D faces… most of them decorate buildings in Paris, but some can be found in cities across the globe, one in Amsterdam! Gregos was born in 1972 and grew up in the northern suburbs of Paris. He’s a self-taught artist and started his career in the late 80s / early 90s. He invented his own 3D technique, and started to replicate his own face with different expressions; which turned into a collection of over 1000 faces! The original motive of TLP was to combine making art and travelling… They started making art in Amsterdam in 1998, focusing on making visually disappointing streets more vibrant. It’s not something to take for granted that this mural still exists on the wall of Prinsengracht 70. First, everything seemed to be alright, the kind owner of the building gave permission for TLP to create black and white image of a totem pole lad being constructed by a Bob Gibson robot. But then the Amsterdam city council’s officials came by and told that TLP would have needed an extra permission to paint the building. Luckily, officials allowed them to finish the characters, but the city council needed to decide whether to keep mural or have a bland wall. In the end, also this story got its happy ending, with the power and support of the local residents and Dutch press, the mural earned an artistic merit and a cultural significance. You’ll find this hidden little sculpture garden near De Plantage, just follow the signs for Zootje Petit Zoo. Believe us when we say that this is no ordinary zoo! The rustic, metal sculptures wait patiently between the grass and plants. This is a wonderful and quirky half-day experience for all the family, just remember to keep your eyes peeled for the dinosaur and the zombie!

Our favourite market in Amsterdam, Noordermarkt! Besides the fact that the location is gorgeous, it’s along the Prinsengracht and on the edge of the Jordaan, its a lovely spot to spend a Monday or Saturday morning. It’s known for its flea market and Farmers market and happens on Mondays and Saturdays only. On Mondays, there’s a textile market on Westerstraat, right next to this one. We’ve all heard the tales of how good Dutch beer is..but where do you start? We’ve got you covered. On our Amsterdam East trail you will end your adventure at one of the most beloved, longest-standing craft breweries in Amsterdam. As a celebration you could try one of their seven standard beers, such as the IPA; Zatte, a Belgian blonde, and the IJwit. If beer isn’t for you, then you could also take the opportunity to try Jenever, a juniper-dominated spirit only really consumed by the Dutch.

Amsterdam’s ‘rough around the edges’ docklands has been revitalised in recent years. Still sporting its industrial charm, abandoned warehouses have been transformed into co-working offices, tasteful waterfront restaurants and vibrant event spaces. In wonderful contrast to the canal district’s traditional tall houses, the Eastern Docklands has provided the city’s architects with a blank canvas to demonstrate contemporary Dutch design.

Amsterdam’s Oud West has all the charm of a residential neighbourhood combined with the flair of the diverse and dynamic area it has become. Admire the concept stores on The Overtoom shopping street or catch an indie film at arthouse cinema LAB111. Its wonderful mishmash of coffee shops, street markets and speciality festivals is a treat for the senses, but the real adventure begins with taste! Tuck into some meat-free delights at Vegan Junk Food bar, sample indo-dutch cuisine by the canal at Waterkant and wash it down with ice-cold Asian cocktails at Happyhappyjoyjoy.

Bike rides, boat trips and…baby goats? Yep, you read it right! A hike in The Amsterdamse Bos is no regular walk in the park. If you love exploring the wide open spaces of the countryside but you’re also not quite ready to wave goodbye to city life, then this is the forest for you. As you walk through the woodlands, you’ll discover an open air theatre, public swimming pools, a canoe lake and a biodynamic goat farm, where you can even take part in early morning yoga sessions with the animals!

Amsterdam’s centre welcomes millions of tourists per year, so it can be difficult to discover a new side to the canal district that no one has seen before. So once you’ve ticked Dam Square and the Van Gogh Museum off your itinerary, consider heading to Utrechtsestraat for food and drinks. Once nicely rested and fuelled, take to the streets of Amsterdam’s centre and discover one of the oldest houses in the city, the Hermitage museum and the ‘skinny bridge’! You can also discover a secret garden cafe on our alternative discovery route.

Take a walk around the multicultural East side of Amsterdam. Spend a couple hours in Indische Buurt, where over 100 languages are spoken by the local residents. Here you’ll find a diverse mix of cafes, bars and hangouts that cater for the many young couples and students that stay in the area. Hop over to the Artis zoo, one of the oldest and largest zoos in Europe, and then stroll along the waterfront of the Eastern Docklands, where there is a growing and thriving creative hub with galleries, restaurants and the self-proclaimed smallest museum in the world!

Though the Dutch cuisine itself might not be world famous, in Amsterdam you can enjoy food from all across the globe – and it’s super tasty too! From hipster breakfast spots, to street food markets and Dutch food as ‘mom’ would cook it – we’ve listed seven of our favourite foodie spots in Amsterdam.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_blurb title=”The Best Breakfast in Amsterdam: Bakers + Roasters” image=”//stg-secretcitytrails-staging.kinsta.cloud/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/1.png” admin_label=”breakfast” _builder_version=”4.16″ header_text_align=”left” body_font=”Ubuntu|300|||||||” body_text_align=”left” z_index_tablet=”500″ global_colors_info=”{}”]

If you’re a brunch or breakfast lover, Bakers + Roasters is a must. This cozy Kiwi cafe offers a delicious healthy menu, including eggs, avocado toast (of course!), pancakes, and even a full vegetarian breakfast. You can complement it with a variety of coffees and freshly squeezed juices. As you wait for one of the lovely employees to text you when your table is available, you can enjoy the amazing view of the canals… What’s not to love?

[/et_pb_blurb][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_blurb title=”Amsterdam’s very own indoor street food market: the De Foodhallen” image=”//stg-secretcitytrails-staging.kinsta.cloud/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/2.png” admin_label=”food market” _builder_version=”4.16″ header_text_align=”left” body_font=”Ubuntu|300|||||||” body_text_align=”left” z_index_tablet=”500″ global_colors_info=”{}”]

One of you wants Asian goodness? The other healthy veggie snacks? Head to De Foodhallen, Amsterdam’s most famous indoor street food market. You can try food from pretty much anywhere in the world, with many options for vegetarians and vegans! Yay! You can also boogie while the live music plays, there’s bands performing every week. Oh and the cocktails (especially the G&Ts) are pretty great too! And since you’re in the neighbourhood, solve our riddles all around Oud West (this area) and find more local foodie and drinks spots!

[/et_pb_blurb][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_3,1_3,1_3″ _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_blurb title=”Meat lover? With four different locations across Amsterdam, Cannibale Royale serves super tasty ribs and burgers until late at night. This is a trendy, yet rustic-looking steakhouse you don’t want to miss!

Amsterdam has a wide range of wonderful options for vegans and vegetarians. The Meatless District is a must. For those seeking a 100% plant-based lunch or dinner, this restaurant serves sandwiches and their famous MD burger! Craving pizza? We LOVE YamYam in Oud West, especially the pizza topped with truffle oil. Though, Sotto Pizza is THE place in Amsterdam that serves pizza according to authentic Neapolitan recipes. Size and quality are superb here!

Vegabond is both a lunchroom and a mini-market. They serve breakfast, lunch and, for those craving sweets, a wide variety of rolls, cookies, and cakes. It’s also a great spot to do your vegan ingredient shopping! Our Jordaan game passes by this spot. Play it to find more foodie secrets in Amsterdam!

We love this place! Moeders is a restaurant with traditional Dutch cuisine. This small restaurant is beautifully decorated with photo frames on their walls – each with pictures of Moms in it. So, if you are looking for a cosy and informal foodie spot, head to Moeders, book a table online and have a Stamppot (mashed potato with sausage, or meatballs – veggie options available!)

Grown ups can enjoy all of that too and you’ll be happy to hear there are several botanic gardens, a café, a restaurant, and two galleries on the ground as well.

Who doesn’t love a good mystery? Turn your family into a team of adventurers following a path of riddles to unlock Amsterdam’s secrets at your own pace. Our top picks for families include a local culture riddle trail in Amsterdam’s Jordaan (can you spot miniature canal houses?) and a walking tour of the best local spots in Amsterdam’s City Centre (with a recommended break in the city’s most curious cafes). If you’d like to get a taste of the experience, try out a teaser game in the City Centre. You’ll be pleased to hear that rather than paying for each player, you only pay a set price for the team. Another great news is that if you don’t manage to complete the trail of riddles in one day, the link for the game is valid for two weeks from the moment you start playing.

Best known for the Dutch culinary classics – pancakes, herring and bitterballen – Amsterdam is definitely considered one of Europe’s top foodie spots. Although these are all extremely delicious, we shouldn’t forget the other tasty food that the city has to offer its visitors. Here are 9 of hidden foodie favourites in the city.

To enjoy more of the city’s undiscovered areas, check out our Amsterdam City Discovery games.

We love good coffee. So we love Monk’s. Since 2016 this cosy café has been hidden next to Pantry Magic Medan. The secret of their popularity is a good quality service and fair portions. Locals don’t only come for the great coffee and cake, they also spend hours working from this lovely spot. Oud West is an up-and-coming district with a young, bohemian crowd and diverse cultural offerings, if this sounds right up your street then have a go at our Oud West game.

The BEST apple pie in town is eaten at Winkel43. Located in a traditional Amsterdam-style house in the heart of Jordaan, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and apple pie with whipped cream on the lovely terrace. Explore more about this neighborhood with our Jordaan game.

Mata Hari is said to be the best excuse to visit the Red Light District and we couldn’t agree more! The building in which you find this cosy restaurant used to be a casino. Our favourite seat in the house is the couch near the window – it’s a wonderful spot for a cup of hot chocolate or glass of red wine on a cold day. When the sun is out, come here for lunch or a beer by the canal! The reasonably-priced menu is Mediterranean with a Dutch twist and they use seasonal products here.

One of the most wonderful wine bars in Amsterdam! Clone 42 is located in the centre of the city, and it’s actually inside a gorgeous canal house! The owners say: ‘We believe that wines should be approachable to people from all ages and all walks of life.’, so at Clone42, they have an extensive wine list! The team also know a lot about their wines, so ask them anything. If wine isn’t your thing, they serve craft beers too – and have a small menu for plates to compliment your drinks.

A brewery and bar inside a windmill! This is one of our favourite spots for locally brewed beers. A little out of the centre, in the Eastern part of the city, but worth the bike ride! The cutest spot in town! Stadspaleis is a short distance away from Dam Square and it’s a tiny café that looks like it has come straight from a fairytale. The café itself only has two tables inside but the outdoor sitting area is larger, making it a great spot for a Spring or Summer day. They serve delicious sandwiches, salads and soups here! Noorderparkbar is on only open during Spring and Summer, however, it’s a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. As the name of this small bar tells, it’s located in Noorderpark and the building is made of material found from Martkplaats (our local Ebay/website for selling second hand items) or donated.

De Kas is one of the finest restaurants in the city! It offers truly unforgettable culinary experiences. Their menu is created daily based on what has been picked from the garden on that day, so your food literally comes straight from the garden to your plate. The building is a giant greenhouse from the 1920s, where during those days it was used as the city’s municipal greenhouse. Even though it’s a stylish restaurant nowadays, the spirit in the times gone by is still there.

One of our favourite spots to work from when we’re out and about in the city. CT Coffee & Coconuts is a stylish three-storey coffee bar in old Ceintuur Theatre that attracts locals. Their retro furniture and brick walls create a relaxing vibe. Coffee and Coconuts is a perfect place to eat throughout the day, their menu has, for example, breakfast burritos and fancy cakes. If you are a coffee lover it’s a place to be too as they have a large variety of special coffees. Play our Pijp Discovery game.
