La Carbonería is an abandoned coal factory in the Eixample district and it is packed with history. The building used to be one of the most famous squats in the city, but in 2014 the police evicted the residents. The building was scheduled to be demolished. Luckily for us, the city council reconsidered and re-categorised it as being of historic and artistic interest. Nowadays, the huge painting of a hot air balloon on its facade has led it to become one of the most photographed murals in Barcelona!

Nearby Montjuic Mountain, you’ll find Jardines de Mossèn Costa i Llobera. What makes this place so special is the impressive variety of beautiful cacti. Generally, people tend to connect cacti with extremely hot deserted locations, but Barcelona has one of the most beautiful botanical reserves for these spiky plants. Go check it out!

It’s pretty easy to spot Gaudi’s work around the streets of Barcelona, but here’s one you may well have missed. Found north of the city centre, Casa Vicens is one of Gaudi’s lesser-known, and sometimes even forgotten, designs. It’s one of the artist’s originals and it dates back to the late 19th century. Beautiful and innovative, this design is definitely worth seeing! If you want to find out more about Barcelona’s street art, read our blog post on it here

You’ve probably heard of Manu Chao, the musician… El Bar Mariachi is actually owned by him and it’s located in the heart of the Gothic Quarter. It can be challenging to find but it’s worth searching for it! It’s a small, colourful and unique – and has a quirky atmosphere. It’s a popular spot among Barcelona’s musicians. If you are lucky, maybe you can even see a live performance of Manu Chao there.

We love games, so it may not be a surprise that this garden made our list! This historical garden is located in the Horta-Guinard district. It’s the oldest conserved garden in the city, with a neoclassical style and a hint of Italian influence. In reality, as the name suggests, it’s a complex maze! At the entrance, you’ll pass a marble Ariadne and Theseus, and… if you make it to the centre you’ll find a statue of Eros. Enjoy!

If you are looking for something completely different on your city trip, Hospital del Tórax is a must see. This spooky, and said to be haunted, abandoned hospital is located in Terrassa. They used to treat people with respiratory illnesses here until 1997. After the closure, people have wandered around the empty halls and claim to see ghosts….
